Please don’t expect too many updates this weekend as I will be heading up to the Gold Coast for a few days. While I am there with my family, we plan on attending the Gold Coast United v Melbourne Victory, not too stressed yet in booking in tickets and reserving seats!
What a win for Seaford United against Casey Comets to win the Pat Kelly Memorial Shield. Did not see that result coming, regardless of it been a preseason match. Casey Comets are either sand bagging their preseason form or they are going to have a tough season this year. Good to see Michael Bonnefin in goals for Casey in the second half and he also rewarded the coach by keeping a clean sheet. I remember him very well from his days at Frankston Pines when they were in the Premier League, but didn’t get much chance to shine at that level as he had to play back up to the clubs then no1 keeper Stuart Webster.
Riversdale idea of splitting their team’s pre-season efforts in participating in the Casey Cup and Eastern Lions cup has now generated four losses out of four. Everyone is scratching their head wondering what Coach Tony Amato is up to! Still, do not doubt he knows how to coach as he helped Riversdale in 2011 to win their first promotion since 1997, and that in his first stint at the roll.
The Monash TRUenergy Shield will take place on Saturday at Torres Reserve in Newborough and hosted by Gippsland Soccer League’s Monash Soccer Club. Last weekend Vic Soccer Club Trojan Athletic emerged winners of the Monash Invitational. Amazingly to hear the Ringwood City pulled on this Saturday because they thought that this Monash club was the Monash University in Clayton! So the club is urgently seeking a replacement. Last I heard these are the teams competing, Monash (GSL), Monbulk Rangers (FFV Prov 1), Bayswater Strikers (BFA), Croydon Ranges (BFA), Old Hill Wanderers (Vic Soccer), Tyers Lightning (GSL) and Harrisfield Hurricanes (FFV Metro).
As for the Eastern Lions Cup, Provisional League 2 SE clubs Collingwood City and Middle Park both picked up victory’s against their much higher placed opposition. With only one round remaining before the finals, it looks very likely at least Middle Park will be in the main final unless they lose to Sandringham and by enough to overcome Middle Park’s four goal difference advantage. Group 1 is still wide open, if Eastern Lions gets at point against Old Scotch then they will advanced to the main final.
Saturday: TURenergy Shield: From 10am @ Torres St Reserve (Google Map)
Monash (GSL), Monbulk Rangers (FFV Prov 1), Bayswater Strikers (BFA), Croydon Ranges (BFA), Old Hill Wanderers (Vic Soccer), Tyers Lightning (GSL), Harrisfield Hurricanes (FFV Metro).
Saturday: Casey Cup fixtures

12:45 Frankston Pines v Melbourne University

Trojan Athletic claimed the Monash Invitational with a captivating 3-2 win on penalties over Bunyip Strikers on Saturday. Both teams topped their respective groups, with Bunyip's one extra goal giving them top spot over hosts Monash and Trojan joined in the final by veterans Barnestoneworth United. The group games were a close affair with all teams still in the running for a spot in the semi's after the first 2 games. Monash and Bayswater fielded their Reserve sides with eyes firmly on next weeks TRUenergy Shield, whilst Middle Park 3rd made the long trip down the highway.
Top spot in both groups were decided with 3-1 wins to both Bunyip and Trojan in their final group games. After a short break the semi finals began with Trojan grabbing a 2nd half winner to knock out the hosts, while Bunyip led 2-1 against Barnestoneworth Utd with seconds remaining until an audacious long range effort found the net to send the game to penalties. The shoot-out saw both keepers make saves, and an injury delay as a Barnestoneworth player had to be stretchered from the pitch after tearing a groin muscle whilst taking his spot kick, which went high and wide. When the shoot-out resumed it was Bunyip who prevailed to take their place in the final.
The final was a tight affair with both teams struggling to break down the opponents defence, and going into the break tied at 0-0. The second half was much the same with goalscoring opportunities limited to long range efforts and set pieces as the defences stood firm.
The penalty shoot-out was a close affair with both keepers making saves, but it was Trojan who took the honours winning 3-2. The Lothar Schnabl Medal for best on ground in the final was awarded to Elbert Teles (Bunyip Strikers).
Group A Results:
Monash 2-0 Bayswater Strikers, Drouin Dragons 0-1 Bunyip Strikers
Bunyip Strikers 0-0 Monash, Drouin Dragons 2-0 Bayswater Strikers
Bunyip Strikers 3-1 Bayswater Strikers, Monash 1-0 Drouin Dragons
Group B Results:
Trojan Athletic 0-0 Middle Park, Barnestoneworth Utd 0-1 Wolves
Barnestoneworth Utd 1-0 Trojan Athletic, Wolves 0-0 Middle Park
Trojan 3-1 Wolves Athletic, Middle Park 0-0 Barnestoneworth Utd
Semi Final Results:
Monash 0-1 Trojan Athletic Barnestoneworth Utd 2-2p Bunyip
Final Result:
Bunyip 0-0p Trojan Athletic (Trojan win 3-2 on penalties)

Since last Tuesday, the FFV has released the entry forms for the newly established women’s Pelada and the men’s State Knockout Cup. Last year’s sponsor (no more mention of them anymore) is not part of the name rights even though they had massive coverage last season - especially in the main papers - when the FFA attempted to fart all over the cup by removing the A-League clubs Victory and the Heart mid-way through the competition. Oh by the way FFA, how is the FFA Cup going! On a side note, the FFV has also added that teams that are knocked out of the first round will have a friendly fixture arranged to compensate.
In the latest development in the Bayside FA Premier division, Hampton Park United Sparrows has elected to drop down to the division 1 due to the club decision to only field one senior team (two teams are required for the Premier Division) along with a Women’s and Legends teams. This decision by the Sparrows had created a vacancy, but division 1 club Chelsea has quickly taken up that place as the club had requested that if such a vacancy occurred they will be prepared to make the jump up. Chelsea this season is attempting to expand from one team last season to three this year, two in the Premier/Reserves division and one in the Legends (over 35’s).
Over the years South Melbourne has been the bench mark for promotion, marketing and coverage for any club in the FFV. But even the Metro teams are starting to get into the action. Old Mentonians has a flash driven promotion on their website to promote their membership drive; they are attempting to reach 80 members. Mazeond United has their “Leave Nothing Undared” Sponsorship Opportunities programme that appears to have got CHI Hino on-board! Not bad going for a new club! Regional club Cobram Victory has put together a video package of highlights from the last season in thier effort to attract new sponsors and members. I have yet to see Paul Seeley’s Seaford United 2012 braocher, but it is anything like last season it will be brilliant. Hey got to say that, it even promoted the fact that games are covered on this very website. Now you know why I get to Seaford so often.
In other Cobram Victory news, Metro club North City Lions will be travelling to Apex Reserve in Cobram for a preseason kick this Saturday at 1pm. Then Cobram will make the long journey to state 2 SE club Langwarrin on Sat 25th with a 5pm kick off for the seniors.

The 2011 Eastern Lions Cup got underway last weekend. In group 1 host Eastern Lions defeated Collingwood City 1 – 0 while Old Scotch defeated Riversdale 1 – 0. In Group 2 Middle Park defeated Waverley Wanderers 3 – 1 in what was perhaps the biggest upset on the day. Moreland City defeated Sandringham 3 -2.
Round 2 fixtures for next Saturday are here. Unfortunately I updated the website to the latest upgrade and in doing so it had an unexpected side effect with Joomla Sport not fully compatible and in doing so I cannot at this stage update the tables.

Pre-Season Cup action will commence at Eastern Lions and Casey Comets this weekend. It is a great chance to see a number of clubs participate new signings. The Hellenic Cup preliminary group stage will be completed this weekend. Results are very hard to come thanks to the lack of effort to update the official website, but Malvern City and South Springvale in the South East division both should have progress already to the main stage.
Bayside FA club Boronia Soccer Club has avoided relegation back to the Bayside FA division 1 after the club accepted the vacancy brought about as Brighton City (Brighton Old Boys new name) will not be promoted as they only have one senior team. Boronia are a three time league champions when they won three titles in a row between 2000-2002.
Endeavour United Reserves and newly formed Mazenod United played out a 2 – 2 draw. It was Mazenod’s first ever match so it was a decent for their first effort. Mazenod have also announced a major sponsor with Sette Bello Restaurant in Glen Waverley.
As you may have noticed, I have uploaded an old classic. Before the A-League commenced, the then newly formed Melbourne Victory participated in a friendly match against a Frankston select in 2005. The match was held at Frankston Pines. I thought for some time that I had lost the original footage but luckly for me as just recently i found it. Stupid me, I had erased a number of games I videoed back then because I thought having copies them of them on DVD’s would last!

Up now are photos from the preseason contest between Provisional 1 SE team Frankston Pines and Provisional 2 SE team Endeavour United. For both clubs it was their first hit out for the year. The Frankston Pines are very eager to change their fortunes after four consecutive relegations and has appointed Danny Verdun as coach. From the dizzy heights of the Premier League to now the Provisional league, a division they have not competed in since 1978, the Frankston Pines will be hoping at least to put in a competitive season for their faithful followers. To check out their divisional history check out the updated ozfoootball page on Frankston Pines. (Click here for the photos)
The Frankston Pines was originally going to start their preseason last weekend against Stan Webster's Morwell Pegasus but concerns the high temperatures put to end those plans. Now they are preparing to compete in the Casey Cup that starts this weekend with a first round match against State 3 club Springvale City.
Endeavour United will continue their preseason with the reserves team in action tonight (Thursday) against newly formed Metro SE club Mazenod United FC at Reema Reserve, KO 07:00.
I have plans to provide video highlights the 2012 Mirabella Cup once that stars in early March. Round one of the league fixtures has presented a number of great fixtures so I may just add a poll to help decided which match to cover. I must have a look to see if I am working that weekend (nightshift) as I may be able to get a night match in as well. For round two I may head to Collingwood City v Seaford United.
Work on the venues section of this website has slowly come to a halt. This section is sort of tedious and during the last month little if any updates have occurred. Now that the FFV has released the fixtures I will start to refocus my efforts to at least have the google maps completed for all divisions.

Box Hill United has announced to the world the appointment of a new senior coach Manni Katakis after previous coach Arthur Georgiu made himself unavailable due to family commitments. The 2011 season was a very successful start for the newly merged club (Box Hill Inter and Southern Suburbs) with a second placed finish. Unfortunately for Box Hill United the State League 2 divisions are the only ones that do not have automatic promotion from second place. Box Hill United was eliminated by eventual promoted team Whittlesea Ranges FC in the playoff.
Provisional League 2 SE club Endeavour United are the latest club to now use pitchero to create their own website at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/endeavourunitedsoccerclub/. Baxter Soccer Club has launched a much needed new website and it can be found at http://www.baxtersoccerclub.org.au/
Bayside FA division 1 club South Eastern Wolves has now merged with Endeavour Sporting ahead of the 2012 season. South Eastern Wolves has been around for many years and for much of their time they were known as Cuscatlán. The last league title they won was in 2004 when they won the division 2. In 2011 it came to a grand final like contest with Seaford United for the division 2 title with Seaford United winning the league honours.
2011 Bayside FA division 1 runners up Brighton Old Boys are seeking to change their name to Brighton City FC. The club is currently one of three clubs that called Dendy Park home; the other two are FFV clubs Brighton and Old Brighton Grammarians.

A few days ago the FFV released another update in regards to the men’s seniors divisions. The change has occurred in the Metro SE division with the division expanded to 13 teams with the inclusion of Parkmore. A vacancy is currently in place for a 14th spot.
I have also been informed that one of the new clubs joining under the name Mazenod Old Boys on the FFV list will actually be named Mazenod United. They will be hosting games from the Mazenod College and utilizing a newly install synthetic pitch. Currently I am updating the maps for this division. Mazenod United has also announced on its facebook page that they appointed Masterchef Judge George Calombaris as their no1 ticket holder. Now if only he would do something like the gourmet sausage rolls that Monash University had a few seasons back!
In a preseason local derby match, Provisional League 3 club Baxter defeated State 2 club Langwarrin 2-1! Yes I know it is only preseason but I am sure that the good people at Baxter will be grinning ear to ear with that result. Baxter also defeated provisional league 2 SE club Skye United 3 -2 the previous weekend.

10 Teams Announced for Country Super League
- News Updates

- Super User
The proposed Country Super League has gained more momentum after it was announced that 10 clubs has applied to be a part of the inaugural season. The league is proposed to be the best outside the A-League and State Premier divisions with a focus on the league and clubs to be conducted at a more professional level to encourage better commercial investment, facilities, community involvement and path for players. The league will be administered by the Goulburn North East FA.
In regards to the ten teams and who they are, six clubs are from the Goulburn North East FA that includes league champions Tatura, Cobram, Cobram Victory, Shepparton, Shepparton South and Shepparton Utd . The other four clubs are from the Griffith & District FA and they are league champions Hanwood FC, West Griffith, Yoogali FC and Yoogali SC.
In the proposed format, the CSL has planned for up to twelve teams to participate, so those who did not apply this season may be able to do so when they are more prepared to make the change. A promotion and relegation system is also noted but that may be a long way off yet even though 2014 is the current target. At least seven players must be under the age of 21. The league will be conducted with an 18 round home and away format with a final series in place with the reserves teams continuing to participate in their local leagues. This may mean that clubs like Kialla United and Benalla Rovers in the GNEFA will have competition more suited after both copped big losses week in week out last season.
The first season will be a men’s only league with the proposal of a women’s division in 2013.

The historically rich website that is www.ozfootball.net has now been updated with the 2011 results and ladders from the Victorian leagues by John Punshon. If you have never been to this website I highly recommend to anybody who enjoys looking up past history. Incredibly it has league tables, league results and cup results from all the way back from 1932. The amount of work that must have been put into this is mind blowing. This is the website I relied heavily on in gaining a grasp of the history of this game in Victoria when I got involved in 2000 with my old website Soccer Venues.
In other news FFV Metro SE champions Harrisfield Hurricanes is the final entry announced as part of the 2011 TRUenegy Shield. The event is hosted by GSL’s Monash Soccer Club on the 26th Feb at Monash Sports Ground in Newborough.
