This is the weekend I work night shift so I am always restricted to what I am able cover and how many matches. Anyhow...
State League 2 South East – Mornington v Langwarrin.
A lot of anticipation is heading into this peninsula derby and what makes it more exciting it is also will be competed between the two top teams so far in the State League 2 SE.
It is the first meeting between this two Peninsula clubs since 1993 when they competed in the State League 4. In round 12 of that season Mornington defeated Langwarrin 1 – 0 and then in the round 27 (incredibly it was a 30 round season back then) Langwarrin reversed the result against Mornington to win 1 – 0. That year Mornington was relegated to the provisional leagues after at one stage participated as high as the State League 1 between the seasons of 1985 and 1986.
After a spell in the Bayside FA between 1997 to 2004, Mornington re-joined the FFV Provisional Leagues in 2005 and that straight after winning the Bayside FA top division. Their second match back was actually played at the then Premier League club Frankston Pines home venue against Old Carey. Ironically a lot of the current Mornington players were even playing for Frankston Pines at that time or at some stage. Now after four promotions including a championship season in 2008, Mornington finds themselves in the same division as Langwarrin. Incredibly, leading into this match, Mornington just smashed Noble Park United 8 – 1.
Langwarrin are looking in no mood to stay in this division after working so hard to get out of it in the first place. After years of playing runners up and getting knocked out at the playoffs stage, Langwarrin captured the title 2004 and have since participated in the State League 1, that was until last year when in dramatic circumstance the club was relegated back to the State League 2 South East. They know more than any other clubs how vital every point is.
On Sunday, not yet decided as I may even stay home to watch the A-League Grand Final. But I may get out to a Bayside FA contest or something close to work as I need to start at 06:30.
